Las Vegas is the perfect place to visit the Grand Canyon Sky Walk. Bus and helicopter tours are the most common way to go there. But you can drive yourself as well. If you choose to drive, here are some itineraries and hints to make the journey to "glass bridge" and your journey more enjoyable.
Grand Canyon West's management has reported that cartographic sites like Google Maps do not generate correct instructions for Skywalk. Use these approved in the park:
- South America Route 93 heading for Phoenix
- Beyond Hoover Dam, keep on South in US 93 in about 40 miles
- Turn left on Pierce Ferry Road and 28 miles
- Turn right (Diamond Bar Road) (East) 21 miles
- Diamond Bar Road ends at the sole entrance of Grand Canyon West, Grand Canyon West Airport.
The last stretch to the Skywalk is a road of 10 miles of dirt. It will take you to a forest of Joshua tree with roughness, roughness, and nature. Hint: It is not uncommon to rent a high clearance vehicle like SUV (sports utility vehicle), reconfirm the condition of the spare tire, and obtain a flat tire, so please inflate it completely.
The mud way ends at the parking lot. From this point onwards private cars are not permitted. The parking fee is $ 20. Next, I will purchase a park entrance pass (called a legacy pass). The price is as follows.
- Adult: $ 43.05
- Child (3-11 years old): $ 35.03
- Advanced / Military: $ 39.85
Please use the free shuttle bus from the parking lot to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. Ticket prices for attractions are:
- Adult: $ 29.95
- Child (3-11 years old): $ 22.46
- Advanced / Military: $ 39.85
Guest tickets allow you to enter the Glass Bridge all day. Cameras and electronic devices can not be used (mobile phones, video cameras, etc.). The locker rental is $ 3. A professional photographer is taking pictures on the deck. Cost: $ 30 per photo.
I will briefly introduce the facts of Skywalk:
- Extend the edge of the West Canyon 's West Rim by 70 feet.
- Stop 4,000 feet above the Colorado River.
- It is designed to support up to 800 people at a time (only 120 are allowed at a time).
- We used custom made glass panels of $ 250,000 each to construct a bridge.
- It is twice as high as the highest skyscraper on Earth.
Let's consider these side trips along the way:
Lake Meade
Located at 30 miles east of Las Vegas, Mead Lake is the largest reservoir in the United States, 500 feet deep and 110 miles long. To go to the lake, turn right at SH 95 at Alan Bible Visitor Center. Tip: Go to Las Vegas' boat harbor and check out the huge carp fish living around the dock.
Hoover Dam
Currently I am driving a Hoover Dam through two lane roads. In the fall of 2010, all vehicle traffic will be diverted to new bypass. For now, consider parking the garage at the visitor center (7 dollars a day) and enjoying the dam on foot. Tip: Join the Hoover Dam Guided Tour. Ticket price is:
- Adult (17 - 61 years old) - $ 11.00
- Elderly people (over 62 years old) - $ 9.00
- Junior (4-16 years old) - $ 9.00
- US Military - $ 9.00
- US Army (Uniform) - Free
- Child (0-3 years) - free
Picture Buff: Please go to one of the Arizona side pullouts for a nice panorama shot.
Driving from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon Sky Walk is a great way to visit this wonderful natural attraction. Please borrow a high clearance car (SUV). Please check the condition of the spare tire (the last 10 miles of the bridge are rough rocks). Please clear the gas. There are great tours such as Lake Miami and Hoover Dam. In addition to rental car and gas costs, parking fee is included. Park entrance fee; Skywalk ticket. Other wonderful ways to get on the Skywalk include all-inclusive buses and helicopter tours (including pick-up and get off at the free hotel).
